Mending with Gold: The Art of Kitsugi
We spend so much of our lives trying to hide our fractures, pretending the breaks never happened. But what if our wounds aren't things to be concealed, but rather the very places that are noble and where our unique light shines through?
Kintsugi (meaning "joining with gold") is the ancient Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with a lacquer dusted with gold. Instead of discarding a broken vessel, or trying to disguise the cracks with invisible glue, this practice treats the breakage and repair as a beautiful, essential part of the object’s history. It considers fractures noble and worth being celebrated.
This beautiful art form is deeply rooted in Zen Buddhism and the philosophy of wabi-sabi, the practice of finding perfection within imperfection, and accepting the natural cycle of life.
